INTEREST LIST FOR 2023

The Korean American Center will host a STARTALK Korean Immersion Program for rising 7th – 9th graders. This year-long program is a unique opportunity that will provide novice high level Korean learners with an amazing and intensive linguistic and cultural experience that can open doors for college and career opportunities in a 21st-century global economy. Under the program theme of “Our Food, Our Heritage” learners will explore foundational aspects of Korean society and find a connection with “Woori” (We/Our), a ubiquitous Korean concept signifying community and unity. Students will examine the past and its influence on the present and understand how Korean culture has affected the language. Through project-based activities, learners will gain a deeper understanding by exploring the connections between culture, food, and language. This year-long program will begin with 2-hour weekly classes from January 9, 2023, to May 27, 2023, leading up to a 3-week summer immersion day camp. The summer camp will run Monday through Friday from June 19, 2023, through July 7, 2023 (3-weeks total) from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Post camp program will take place from September 9, 2023, and will commence on November 18, 2023, with an awards ceremony.  At the completion, participants will receive 132 hours of instruction and a Congressional Certificate of Recognition, and the opportunity to do an internship with the City of Irvine working specifically on Korean community outreach projects. Acceptance to the 2023 STARTALK program will be for the entire year.
