All classes, except as noted, will be held online via Zoom. Our nationally recognized program is now accepting students throughout the country on a first come, first serve basis. Our classes are dynamic LIVE CLASS – this is not a self-study course nor is it module based learning. Our interactive classes are designed for young Korean learners.
We are the only institute in nation to receive designation by BOTH the United States government and the Korean government for the teaching of Korean language. Our classes have been featured on NBC News America and in various other media outlets.
Since Korean American Center is a designated King Sejong Institute, all our instructors are certified by the South Korean Government to teach Korean as a foreign language.
Did you know that Korean is considered a “critical language” according to the United States government?
“Critical language” is a term used in the to designate languages for which there is large demand for language professionals but little supply. We believe the earlier children learn Korean, the better positioned they will be for the future.
SUMMER 2023 CLASS SCHEDULE

Most of our weekday classes will be held twice per week. We have found that for young beginning level Korean learners, students learn and retain more when classes are held twice per week, versus the same amount of time once per week.

The cost of our 5-week program is plus $10 technology fee. Program includes materials that will be send via email. No additional books will be required.

- Prerequisite: Returning students should enroll in this class or students who have proficiency in the topics covered in the first session. Students must already recognize basic vowels and consonants of Hangul.

About Our Program 한국학교
Our classes are aligned with ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Our classes, unless otherwise noted, are at the Novice Low and Novice Mid level based on ACTFL Proficiency Benchmarks.
Through incorporating 21st century technology, Students will be able to increase their Korean language proficiency, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
In addition to learning the language, students will learn about aspects of Korean culture and history through activity based learning. It is our goal that students develop a sense of pride and appreciation of their Korean heritage.
Class Location:
All Classes, with the exception of our Book Club Korean Classes, will take place via Zoom. Please make sure your students have access to a computer with a camera and microphone.

Why Learn Korean?
Korean is an increasingly important language on the world stage. Korea has one of the world’s largest and most innovative economies. The Korean cultural impact around the world is representative of the continued growth of Asian influence in America.
Because Korean is still not a widely taught language, there will be a shortage of Americans who can speak Korean. Learning Korean connects your child to 75 million people worldwide and will provide your child them with greater opportunities in a 21st century global environment.
Will learning a second language be confusing for my child?
No. Learning a second language does not cause language confusion, language delay or cognitive deficit, which have been concerns in the past. In fact, according to studies at the Cornell Language Acquisition Lab (CLAL), students who learn a second language can maintain attention despite outside stimuli better than children who know only one language. Students in the process of learning a second language that have been evaluated on standardized testing procedures used in schools, received higher scores in more than just the verbal aspect of the tests. They also scored higher in math.
Will my child’s academic learning be compromised by spending time learning Korean?
No. Students are likely to have higher levels of academic success throughout school. When a students learns a second language, it not only activates the components of the brain that are responsible for verbal and written communication, but it also activates the areas of the brain that are directly responsible for reasoning, thinking, and numeric understanding. As a result, the student is capable of excelling in virtually every area of their academic careers.
TERMS (Please read before registering):
- Fees are non-refundable (except in the case of class cancellation by KAC). Please do not register if you are unsure.
- Fees are non-transferable to another semester. No Credits will be given for missed classes. Since we are a nonprofit organization, we do not have the administrative capacity to handle these requests.

STARTALK IMMERSION PROGRAM
Interest list for STARTALK* 2023 Korean Language Immersion Program

- Increase the number of highly effective materials and curricula available to teachers and students of critical need languages
Korean American Center is proud to be part of this highly selection national STARTALK network of programs to promote Korean language learning in the United States.
The application does not guarantee admission. Students who attended our 2022 summer camp and existing program will be given priority for the 2023 STARTALK program.
The Korean American Center will host a STARTALK Korean Immersion Program for 6th – 9th graders. This year-long program is a unique opportunity that will provide novice high level Korean learners with an amazing and intensive linguistic and cultural experience that can open doors for college and career opportunities in a 21st-century global economy.
Under the program theme of “Our Food, Our Heritage” learners will explore foundational aspects of Korean society and find a connection with “Woori” (We/Our), a ubiquitous Korean concept signifying community and unity. Students will examine the past and its influence on the present and understand how Korean culture has affected the language. Through project-based activities, learners will gain a deeper understanding by exploring the connections between culture, food, and language. This year-long program will begin with 2-hour weekly classes from January 8, 2023, to May 28, 2023, leading up to a 3-week summer immersion day camp. The summer camp will run Monday through Friday from June 19, 2023, through July 7, 2023 (3-weeks total) from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Post camp program will take place from September 9, 2023, and will commence on November 18, 2023, with an awards ceremony. At the completion, participants will receive 132 hours of instruction and a Congressional Certificate of Recognition, and the opportunity to do an internship with the City of Irvine working specifically on Korean community outreach projects. Acceptance to the 2023 STARTALK program will be for the entire year.

A total of 132 instructional hours will be completed.

We may request an interview depending on the number of applicants.
Program Costs:
If accepted, tuition and most materials for this program will be provided by the National Security Agency. Students will only need to pay $199 administrative processing fee upon acceptance. Students who attend our 2022 summer camp will have their administrative fee waived. There will be $10 application fee due at the time of application for all students.

미주 한인 2, 3세 중학생들을 위한 2018 스타톡(StarTalk) 여름 한국어 교실
오렌지카운티 한미문화센터(Korean American Center)에서는 UCI’s Center for Critical Korean Studies와 함께 곧 다가올 2018년 여름, 한인 2, 3세 중학생(6학년부터 8학년까지)들을 위한 심화 한국어 수업을 개설합니다.
2018년에 진행될 스타톡 한국어 수업은, 학생들로 하여금 포괄적인 언어 능력을 기르고 한국어에 대한 지식을 집중적으로 쌓을 수 있도록 고안되었습니다. 이 프로그램은 언어 학습을 위한 세계적 용이성 기준에 맞춰져 있으며, 말하기, 듣기, 읽기, 쓰기 능력을 기르고 싶어하는 초급부터 중급 정도의 한국어 실력을 가진 한인 2, 3세 중학생들을 위한 수업입니다. 단, 학생 모집 인원은 제한적입니다.
특별히 21세기형 수업과 학습을 통해, 학생들은 실제 상황에 응용 가능한 한국어를 배우게 될 것입니다. 학생들은 과거와 소통하고, 그것이 현재에 미치는 영향을 탐구하게 될 것입니다. 또한, 가족들과 지역 사회 구성원들을 인터뷰하는 <지역 역사 비디오 프로젝트>를 통해 친구들과의 친목을 다지고, 가족들과 유대관계를 더욱 돈독히 하게 될 것입니다. 학생들이 제작한 이 비디오 프로젝트는 스타톡 한국어 수업 마지막 날에 그동안 교실에서 진행된 다른 프로젝트들과 함께 상영될 것입니다.
스타톡 프로그램은 다음과 같은 부분에 초점을 두고 있습니다.
