Private Korean Lessons - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes. Lots of learners pair a weekly class with 1:1 tutoring to accelerate speaking, polish pronunciation, or prepare for exams (Seal of Biliteracy, placement tests, TOPIK). We’ll coordinate so your private instructor reinforces what you’re learning in class–targeted practice, feedback, and catch-up when you miss a session.

Absolutely not! Our 1:1 lessons are perfect for absolute beginners with no previous exposure to Korean language.

You are never too old to learn Korean. Our oldest student is 94 years young!

We accept all learners 5 years and over.

No—it’s not the best use of your money. Under-5s learn languages most naturally through play, music, stories, and everyday interaction. Formal tutoring at this age often turns into paid babysitting or drills they’re not developmentally ready for. Most kids are ready around age 5, when they can sit for ~30–45 minutes, follow simple directions, and begin recognizing letters (Hangul).

Sometimes. Parent + teen (age 15+) can share a semi-private lesson if you’re truly the same level and comfortable moving at the teen’s pace; for learners under 15, we do not accept parent-child semi-privates because the learning goals and strategies are different Even for 15+, your instructor may recommend splitting later if pacing or goals diverge.

Each package must be used within 30 days of purchase, and all package hours must be completed within 90 days. Exceptions can only be granted in advance (e.g., planned travel) with Director approval.

After the first 60 minutes, packages may be applied in 30-minute increments for extended sessions (e.g., a 90-minute lesson deducts 1.5 lessons from your package). Packages aren’t shareable between learners.

No. Lessons under 60 minutes are counted as a full hour. We do not offer stand-alone 30-minute lessons. After the first 60 minutes, packages may be applied in 30-minute increments for extended sessions (e.g., a 90-minute lesson deducts 1.5 lessons from your package).

For students that require special needs and adjusted pacing, let us know in advance so we can work with you.

At our Irvine center only (20 Truman St, Suite 100). We don’t travel to homes or cafés. Live online sessions via Zoom are also available. We will travel to schools or businesses.

Yes. We can travel to your school or workplace for group lessons. Minimum enrollment, a multi-week schedule, and suitable space are required. Email info@KoreanAmericanCenter.org to discuss goals, group size, schedule, and pricing.

Yes. An official King Sejong Institute certificate, stamped with our institutional seal and formally recognized by the Korean government will be issued at the completion of 30 hours and passing the appropriate level test.
